Maurice Dobson Museum Visitors Centre

Maurice Dobson Museum, 2 Vicar Lane, Darfield, Barnsley, S73 9JZ

Who we are

A restored Georgian Yeoman's residence where Darfield's long history is brought to life. We are open!

Bequeath to the Darfield Amenity Society by Maurice Dobson, Darfield Museum has antiques and artefacts from Maurice Dobson as well as two rooms that have artefacts that show Darfield's long industrial and social history.

Our museum tells the story of Darfield and Darfield people.  Hoards of Roman coins have been found in the village.  The Norman church tower is built on Anglo Saxon Foundations and as the village grew in the 19th century, families moved into the area to work in the coal mines which were developing in the neighbouring valleys and memorabilia from this and other local industries are displayed.

We also have:

  • A shop selling the work of local craftspeople
  • A tea shop displaying a changing gallery of art and craft work by local people.
  • A sunny courtyard with our artist in residence
  • Refreshments including homemade cakes, toast, teacakes and muffins.
  • Traditional afternoon teas are available on Wednesday afternoons 1pm - 4pm  (bookings only)
  • Access to some local archives for family and similar research.
  • Special events held throughout the year

If you wish, a guided tour is available as well as space for groups and schools wanting to visit and look around the museum.

The museum is also suitable for walkers or cyclists to call for refreshments and we can arrange a secure area for cycle storage.
