Description
Health screening is a valuable and effective way of keeping yourself healthy and the early detection can lead to more effective interventions, minimising the risk of the development of serious complications.
In England there are currently three well established adult national cancer screening
programmes. The three adult programmes are broken down into breast, bowel and cervical
cancer screening. Eligibility criteria for each of the programmes differ but individuals will be
eligible for some or all of these programmes at some point in their lives.
- Breast - Offered routinely to women over 50 up to their 71st birthday, other women can self refer.
- Bowel - Offered to people aged 60 to 74 every 2 years (it is gradually being introduced to people over 50)
- Cervical - Offered to women aged from 25 to 64 every 5 years
Other screening is also offered
- Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) - Offered to men during the year they turn 65, older men can self refer
- Diabetic Eye - Offered annually to people with diabetes aged 12 and over.
