This fantastic new experience at Northern College is an excellent opportunity for you and your family to come together in a forest setting to learn new skills, solve problems and even build your own family shelter. Working together as a family to spend time together, talk and have fun.
This residential will help your family to:
- Develop your skills to communicate positively together
- Work together to solve challenges by sharing each other's strengths and skills
- Use an iPad to record your learning journey
- Identify the types of volunteering you may be interested in as a family
- Agree a family pledge to become more active in your community
To engage families with adolescent children to work positively together, developing the motivation and aspiration to engage in further learning, voluntary work, or paid work. After completion of this course, you may want to think about refreshing or developing your English, Maths and Digital skills, or you could try something new from our course booklet.
A residential course that promotes a positive learning experience and introduction to family volunteering. If Covid restrictions are such that the college is required to stop teaching face to face, this course will continue online.
A selection of activities in the woods including shelter building, team games, using hand tools, exploring the environment, an opportunity to explore family volunteering in Barnsley, to include volunteering at the National Trust and Barnsley Museums.
- The family must reside in the Barnsley borough
- Families with at least one child aged between 11 and 18 years old
- Families experiencing disadvantage related to any of the criteria deployed by the 'Think Family Programme.'

When is this course and how long does it last?
This course runs over a weekend at Northern College where accommodation is available on site.
The course runs from 9:30am - 4:30pm on a Saturday and 9:30am - 4:40pm on a Sunday.
Accommodation and meals are included with the course.

Eligibility: The family must reside in the Barnsley borough Families with at least one child aged between 11 and 18 years old. Families experiencing disadvantage related to any of the criteria deployed by the ‘Troubled Families’ programme. The family must be in receipt of Universal Credit, ‘in-work’ benefits due to having an assessed low income, or be defined as having a low income in accordance with benefit thresholds.
