BIADS - SENSORY SNUG FOR CARERS AND PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA

BIADS' Support Centre, Joseph Exley House, Dean Street, Barnsley, S70 6EX

Who we are

We now own our own Multi-Sensory Unit (MSU) and we are excited about the opportunities we hope it will provide to improve feelings of well-being for both carers and people with dementia.

Description

Our Sensory Snug is where our Multi-sensory Unit is located and is upstairs in the centre and can be accessed via the chair lift if needed. This is a safe, calming space for people with dementia to access with their loved one or family members.

It can be used by people at any stage of dementia and is used to stimulate memory, language and concentration, to promote wellbeing, to decrease anxiety and/or depression, to stimulate communication and to provide comfort. It can lead to a decrease in agitation and an improvement in mood. There is lots of equipment provided in the room such as essential oils to add fragrance. Alongside toys, games, books and household objects all to trigger memories and promote wellbeing.

There is also a fibre optic lighting unit as well as soft furnishings, mood lighting and a warm cosy environment.

We are also looking at the possibility of trained volunteers helping with the sensory snug on a 1:1 basis while the carer attends a Carer Support Group.

Contact us if you would like to come for a look around first or to make a referral.
