Description
Our mission is ‘Making South Yorkshire Safer and Stronger’ and our work to achieve this extends to far more than fighting fires.
Our firefighters are supported by teams of support staff who are skilled to provide a wide range of specialist services. This includes our community safety work and our responsibilities to enforce business fire safety laws. We also work with a network of volunteers to further extend the reach of our prevention work.
Serious house fires are thankfully quite rare. But if a fire does start, it can quickly cause a lot of damage and put the lives of you and your loved ones in danger.
Our website has a host of information and referrals for the following:
Safety Advice
- Request a safety visit – this is where you can request a home safety check from our staff
- Safety in the home – this section includes information about things such as smoke alarms, kitchen hazards and escape routes
- Safety in the community – this section covers advice on things such as water and road safety
- Partnerships – this section includes information on who our partner agencies are, and how we work with them
- Safe and well referral scheme – this is where Safe & Well referral partners can make referrals
- Latest safety work – this section includes information on our latest safety campaigns
As well as this, we have also collated some of our key advice below. By taking these few simple steps, you can massively reduce the likelihood of you suffering a fire.
Our top 10 tips for staying safe at home are:
- Make sure you have smoke alarms on every floor of your home
- Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they are working. Please test smoke alarms weekly
- Take extra care in the kitchen and never leave cooking unattended
- Never use a chip pan or any other pan filled with hot oil
- Don’t overload electric sockets– most can only take a maximum of 13 amps
- Keep matches and lighters away from children
- Keep clothes well away from heaters and open fires
- Put out cigarettes properly and dispose of them carefully
- Don’t charge things like mobile phones, tablets or e-cigs overnight, or longer than the recommended charging time
- Plan an escape route and make sure everyone in the house knows how to get out in the event of a fire.
Young People and Education
We have developed a number of safety education programmes to help increase the awareness of children and young people about the risks of fire and to help develop the skills they need to stay safe.
Strong links have been built up with a number of schools and colleges across the county. These links provide an opportunity for us to strike up a rapport with the young people and educate them about the role of the fire service and the dangers of arson, hoax calls, road safety and the consequences of reckless driving.
We also work closely with the Prince's Trust and The Fire Cadets Scheme. Please visit our website for more information.
