How to prepare
Medically dependent: If you use electrically powered medical equipment, make sure you have a plan. Get a backup power supply if possible, join our free Priority Services Membership, inform carers and prepare essential supplies so you stay safe and supported during a power cut.
Lighting: Keep a torch with spare batteries in an accessible location. Avoid using candles as they can pose a fire risk, a battery-powered or wind-up torch is the safest option.
Heating: Have extra blankets, warm clothing and a hot water bottle ready. If you use gas heating, check if it will still function without electricity. Never use outdoor heaters indoors.
Food and Drink: If you can, stock up on non‑perishable food and bottled water. Use a vacuum flask to store hot water, and try to limit opening your fridge or freezer so food stays cold for longer, most fridges keep food fresh for up to 12 hrs and chest freezers up to 24 hrs.
Electronics: Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and keep a power bank as a backup. Save important contact numbers, including the national power cut reporting number 105 to your phone.
Animals: If you have pets or livestock, ensure they're comfortable and have plenty of food and water. If you rely on heated tanks or aquariums, consider a battery-powered backup or insulation methods.
