Who we are

Suicide Sucks CIC is a South Yorkshire-based, not-for-profit community organisation dedicated to raising awareness of suicide, breaking down stigma and encouraging open, honest conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.

Description

Founded through lived experience of suicide loss, our mission is simple: to help people feel less alone, create connections and remind people that there is hope, even during life's darkest moments.

We believe that talking about suicide should not be something people are afraid to do. Through community activities, awareness campaigns, storytelling and events, we create welcoming, non-judgemental spaces where people can connect, have fun, share experiences and feel supported.

Our work primarily takes place across Barnsley, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, although our awareness campaigns and podcast reach people much further afield.

What We Offer

Silent Stompers – Community Silent Discos

Our Silent Stompers sessions bring people together through music, movement and connection. Participants wear wireless headphones and enjoy music in a relaxed, welcoming environment where they can dance, move at their own pace or simply enjoy being around others.

There are no dance routines, no expectations and no pressure. Our sessions are designed to improve wellbeing, reduce isolation, encourage physical activity and create a sense of belonging.

We offer regular free community sessions, alongside special events and activities for different groups, including older adults, carers and people who may experience social isolation.

8 Minutes Mate – Suicide Prevention Awareness

Our 'Have You Got 8 Minutes Mate?' campaign encourages people to make time for meaningful conversations and check in with those around them. Sometimes a simple conversation can make a difference to someone who is struggling. The campaign aims to build confidence in talking about suicide, recognising when someone may need support and encouraging people to listen without judgement.

Through awareness materials, community engagement and creative projects, we aim to make conversations about suicide a normal part of everyday life.

Suicide Sucks Podcast – Still Here to Tell the Tale

Our podcast shares powerful, honest and hopeful conversations with people who have experienced suicidal thoughts, survived suicide attempts, lost someone to suicide or work to support others. Recorded in our campervan, these relaxed conversations explore people's experiences, what helped them through difficult times and what gives them hope today.

The podcast aims to reduce stigma, increase understanding and help listeners realise they are not alone.

Community Events and Wellbeing Activities

We organise a variety of activities designed to bring people together, promote positive mental wellbeing and encourage connection. These include:

  • Community silent discos and music-based wellbeing sessions.

  • Wellbeing retreats featuring activities such as breathwork, sound baths, creative expression and gentle movement.

  • Fundraising events, comedy nights and community gatherings.

  • Suicide awareness campaigns, exhibitions and opportunities for people to share their lived experiences

  • Collaborative activities with local community groups, care settings and other organisations.

Our events are designed to be inclusive, supportive and enjoyable. We believe that laughter, music, movement, creativity and human connection all have an important role to play in supporting wellbeing.

Who Can Access Our Services?

Our activities are open to a wide range of people, including those who:

  • Feel lonely or socially isolated

  • Want to improve their mental wellbeing

  • Have been affected by suicide or poor mental health

  • Would benefit from social connection and a sense of community

  • Want to become more physically active in a fun, accessible way

  • Simply want to meet new people, enjoy music and feel part of something positive

You do not need to have experienced mental health difficulties or been affected by suicide to participate in our community activities.

Our Approach

At Suicide Sucks, we recognise that supporting mental wellbeing does not always have to involve sitting down and talking about difficult feelings. Sometimes it starts with putting on a pair of headphones, having a dance, sharing a laugh, meeting someone new or simply feeling that you belong.

We are a lived-experience-led community organisation, not a clinical mental health or crisis intervention service. We do not provide counselling, diagnosis or emergency support, but we encourage conversations, offer peer connection and signpost people towards appropriate professional services when needed.

Above all, we want people to know that they matter, that their stories matter and that nobody should have to face difficult times alone.
